Senior Remodeling Experts Founder Chris Moore Featured on PBS Kansas’ Empowering Seniors

National aging-in-place expert discusses how thoughtful home design can preserve independence, reduce daily risk, and help homeowners create a true forever home

SALEM, Va. — Chris Moore, founder of Senior Remodeling Experts and a nationally recognized Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist, recently appeared on the PBS Kansas television program Empowering Seniors to discuss how homeowners can prepare their homes to support safety, independence, and quality of life for decades to come.

During the episode, titled “Creating Your Forever Home,” host Katherine Ambrose welcomed Moore to the studio for a wide-ranging conversation about proactive aging-in-place planning.

Moore explained that many American homes were designed as what he calls “Peter Pan housing”—homes built as though the people living in them will never experience changes in mobility, vision, balance, or strength.

“The challenge is not simply a person’s ability,” Moore said during the interview. “It is often the disconnect between that person’s ability and the environment in which they are living.”

A narrow doorway, poorly lit hallway, slippery bathroom floor, or a single step at an entrance may create unnecessary friction and risk. Thoughtful design can reduce those barriers without making a home feel institutional or clinical.

The conversation emphasized that aging-in-place remodeling is not about surrendering to decline. It is about planning ahead so homeowners can continue living with greater confidence, comfort, and control.

“Making your home more user-friendly is not giving up,” Moore said. “It is a proactive way to preserve your independence.”

Two Features That Can Make a Lasting Difference

Moore identified two foundational features that can help make a home more supportive over time:

A zero-step entry. At least one entrance should allow a person to enter without climbing stairs. This benefits people using mobility devices, but it also makes daily life easier for families with strollers, homeowners carrying groceries, visitors recovering from an injury, and delivery professionals.

An accessible bathroom. Bathrooms can present significant risks because of moisture, slippery surfaces, limited space, and narrow doorways. A well-designed bathroom may include a wider entrance, slip-resistant flooring, a curbless or beach-entry shower, glare-free lighting, proper ventilation, and strategically placed support features.

Moore also discussed the role of layered lighting, motion-activated night lighting, clear walking paths, thoughtful floor transitions, and home layouts that make movement easier and more intuitive.

Planning Before a Crisis Preserves More Options

One of the central messages of the episode was the importance of beginning the conversation before a fall, hospitalization, or sudden health change forces a family to make decisions under pressure.

“The biggest thing is to have the conversation,” Moore said. “Talk about your plans, your goals, and your expectations. When nothing is done until there is a crisis, your options become severely limited.”

Veterans may also be eligible for home-modification assistance through the Department of Veterans Affairs, including the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations program and Specially Adapted Housing grants.
