In Storm Season, Sydney Drain Jobs Show How Clearing and Camera Checks Differ
HORNSBY, New South Wales, October 19, 2026 — As storm season gets under way in Sydney, Scott & Sons Plumbers' job records from Mount Colah, Pennant Hills and North Sydney show how blocked-drain work divides into two separate tasks: clearing the blockage, and finding out why it happened. The three jobs are dated 6 and 7 October, the week after the NSW SES urged Sydney residents to clean gutters and drains to improve water flow around their homes ahead of severe thunderstorms over the long weekend.

"The useful detail for a property owner is what was cleared, what was inspected and what the next decision involves, so I want the scope to make those parts of a drainage visit clear," said Craig Scott, Director, Scott & Sons Plumbers.
The family-owned Hornsby business has served Sydney for more than 40 years, holds contractor licence 141840C and has been a member of the Master Plumbers Association since 1999.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Sydney on 3 October, for damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding. NSW storm season runs from September to April, according to the NSW SES.
Clearing a Drain and Inspecting It Are Different Jobs
Water jetting uses pressurised water to break up and move the material causing a blockage. A camera inspection answers a different question: what condition the pipe is in, and whether a defect inside it is likely to cause the blockage to return.
The October records show how the method changes with the job.
At Mount Colah on 6 October, the team used jet blasting through an accessible opening together with a CCTV inspection, with a recording offered to the client on request.
At Pennant Hills the same day, a partly blocked sewer was inspected in the front garden before high-pressure water jetting. The visit also covered tap and toilet repairs: a leaking mini tap behind the toilet was replaced, a new flexible connection fitted and broken flush buttons replaced.
At North Sydney on 7 October, a hand plunger cleared a blockage affecting a toilet pan and sink, followed by a paper test through to the boundary trap to confirm water was flowing freely.
Three jobs, three methods. A plunger suits a simple obstruction close to a fixture, high-pressure water suits material further down the line, and a camera is the tool when the question is why a drain keeps blocking.
When a Blockage Keeps Coming Back
For a recurring blockage, a camera inspection can help identify defects, show how much of the pipe is affected and identify the access available for a repair.
That information decides the next step. Where the pipe can be cleaned and prepared, pipe relining repairs it from the inside. A collapsed section, or a line that has moved out of alignment, may need to be dug up and replaced, with the cost of reinstating lawns, paving or driveways included in the comparison.
For households heading into storm season, the practical step is knowing which kind of visit to ask for: a clear for a one-off blockage, or a clear with a camera inspection when water backs up more than once.
With storm season running until April, Scott & Sons publishes selected drainage jobs by date and suburb on the Scott & Sons Plumbers website, so households across Hornsby and the Upper North Shore can see the work involved before they call.
